A career at the bar?

If you want to pursue a career at the bar you need to be aware it is a highly competitive career. Only 1 in 3 of those who complete the Bar Vocational Course go on to get tenancy. Bearing in mind all these people have at least 3 As at A level and 2.1 degree its really tough competition. So be prepared!  If it is what you really want then here’s what you need to do…  

 

1.   Get experience

·        Mini pupillages

 ·        Inns of court dinners  

 

2.   Get involved

Your CV needs to be full of things which show a passion for law and that you are a well rounded person

 

·        Mooting – if you want to be a barrister you have to do it.

·        Debating – great way to develop your verbal skills and learning to think on your feet

·        Pro bono

·        Sport – shows you can work with people and a work – life balance

·        Other societies – doesn’t matter where your passions lie whether its Rag or skydiving just make sure you take an active role. 

 

3.   Be in the know

It’s vital you don’t miss the deadlines when it comes to your career!Whatever stage you are at there’s something you should be doing…  

 

Autumn Term

Get involved! Mooting, debating, pro bono, sport… 

 

2nd year

Attend careers fairsLook into BVC providers  

 

3rd year

Join an Inn of CourtApply to the BVCCheck out Inn ScholarshipsResearch pupillages  

 

Spring term

Continue building your CV!  

 

2nd year
