Leeds University Law Society is the biggest and most active society at Leeds University. We are very proud that we are the biggest University Law Society in Europe.
Our aim is to provide vital additions to your life as a lawyer, including social, sport, academic and career activities. All Law Society members can take part in all elections, as well as the Annual General Meeting which takes place in March or April.
As a Law Society member you also have the opportunity to become an editor, journalist or photographer for “Unlawful Entry", the Law Society magazine published before Christmas, or our website.
We hold a Careers Dinner in the first semester of every year, offering Law Society members the chance to speak with solicitors about future career plans. In addition are presentations hosted by law firms on campus where you will have the opportunity to discover more about a particular firm and network with its trainees, associates and partners.
Leeds University Law Society offers domestic and national debating, negotiation and mooting competitions. We hold a mooting competition specifically for first years and another for the other years enabling individuals to develop this key skill. Likewise, debating and negotiation events and competitions are available.
Leeds Law Society has a fantastic reputation at the University for social events. Many of our events are sponsored by national and international law firms; for example the Staff-Student cricket match hosted in the last two years, umpired by Geoffrey Boycott and sponsored by Allen & Overy.
The pinnacle of the Law Society social calendar has to be the Law Ball. We plan to build on the success of the Venetian Masquerade theme of the Law Ball 2008 with something equally exciting and grandeur.
As a Law Society member you also have the opportunity to obtain cheap books from the annual Book Sale which is held at the start of every academic year.
We hold an annual Sports Dinner to celebrate the success and dedication of our sports teams, which are entered into the intra-mural leagues at the University. Additionally, our football, netball and rugby teams play in national tournaments.
While competing in competitions is advised, we encourage students who play on a more casual basis to become involved as well. This last year the Law School in conjunction with the Leeds University Law Society hosted a charity run in aid of Jane’s Appeal.
